About us
We’re Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC), a key division of the Metro Public Health Department, serving the entire Nashville-Davidson County region. As the city’s primary municipal shelter, we provide essential public health services that directly impact both animals and the people who care about them.
We manage a broad and complex caseload, supporting everything from emergency intake and animal cruelty investigations to community desexing initiatives and public education. Our work extends well beyond the shelter walls. It is woven into the health, safety, and well-being of the wider community.
Throughout the year, our veterinary and animal care teams provide shelter medicine, high-volume spay and neuter procedures, post-adoption support, and care for animals in foster homes. We work in close partnership with rescue organizations, local clinics, universities, and community leaders to improve outcomes for animals and reduce barriers to care.
Our role is both medical and civic. We are part of the city’s public health backbone, supporting animal welfare, managing population control, and contributing to a more humane and connected Nashville.
Just as important, we’re a team of people who care deeply… about the work, the animals, and each other. If you value trust, collaboration, and community-minded care, you’ll feel like you have found your fur-ever home here.
Working here gives you a sense of purpose you don’t always get in private practice. Every day is different. It’s important work, and you’re surrounded by people just like you who care – Team Member – MACC

About this role
You know the fundamentals: exams, surgery, and medical management. But this role is about more than just clinical practice. As a key member of our shelter medicine team, you will:
- Deliver medical care to shelter animals, from preventive to emergency
- Perform high-volume spay and neuter surgeries in a structured, supported setting
- Support public health and safety through population control and disease prevention
- Assist in cruelty and neglect investigations where needed
- Collaborate with technicians, animal care staff, and leadership to support best practices
- Contribute to outreach initiatives and low-cost community care programs
There’s room to grow your skills here, and space to do the work in a way that aligns with your values. Whether you’re experienced or just starting out, what matters most is your commitment to the animals and to the team.

About you
You’re a veterinarian who finds meaning in helping animals that might not have anyone else. You’re collaborative, steady under pressure, and open to learning every day. You may not have shelter experience, and that’s okay. What matters most is that you bring empathy, clinical know-how, and a willingness to be part of something bigger.
You’re someone who:
- Cares as much about the team and our community as the medicine
- Appreciates a steady and supportive work environment
- Is comfortable with variety, from wellness to urgent care
- Understands that progress is built one day, one patient, one outcome at a time
If this sounds like the kind of work you’d be proud to do, in a team that has your back, we’d love to hear from you. Just click the Apply button, answer a couple of quick questions, and we’ll be in touch.

Our location
Nashville is more than music (though there’s plenty of that, too). It’s a vibrant and welcoming city with a strong sense of community, a lower cost of living than most major metros, and no state income tax. Whether you’re into food, green space, live gigs, or quiet weekends, it’s all here. Schools are great, medical facilities are high quality, as are community facilities, from sports to entertainment. All this and more make Nashville an ideal lifestyle location for veterinary professionals – whether single, part of a couple, or raising a family.
We’re proud to be part of a city that’s growing with purpose, and doing our part to care for the animals and people who call it home.

Our offer
We’re a public service organization, but we work hard to ensure our veterinary team is well-supported. Here’s what you can expect:
- Competitive annual salary range: $106,924 – $165,732
- Comprehensive healthcare benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Secure retirement through the Metro Government pension plan
- Employee Assistance Program extending to household family members
- Metro employee perks program offering discounts on:
- Travel
- Event tickets
- Retail purchases
- And more
And perhaps most importantly, you’ll be part of a team that shows up for the animals and for each other.
