About us
Advanced Veterinary Specialists has earned its standing the right way: through consistent, high-caliber care delivered by a team that takes real pride in what they do. Our hospital is Level II VECCS-certified, and our multidisciplinary team brings together emergency clinicians, surgeons, oncologists, cardiologists, and a nursing staff that makes a genuine difference every single day. On California’s central coast, we’ve built a clinical environment where the medicine is serious and the culture backs it up.
We’re part of Ethos Veterinary Health, a network of over 140 specialty and emergency hospitals across North America, with more than 1,500 specialized doctors providing care for nearly two million pets annually. That network gives our team access to shared knowledge, clinical resources, and a professional community that sets a real standard in specialty veterinary medicine. Closer to home, we invest in our people through a dedicated Learning and Development department, generous CE support, and meaningful pathways into advanced practice. This is a place where clinical ambition has room to grow.
Everyone from our initial phone call through our final check was fantastic. So caring and kind, supportive and compassionate. We were extremely lucky to have had a positive outcome for our pup, and credit the immediate care and knowledgeable staff. We could never thank all of them enough – Gary H – Google Review
About this role
As our incoming Veterinary Surgeon, you’ll step into a busy, well-supported caseload within a hospital that has the depth and infrastructure to back you up. Working alongside emergency doctors, oncologists, and cardiologists, you’ll approach complex cases as part of a true multidisciplinary team, with the diagnostic tools and specialist collaboration to see each one through from first assessment to a strong outcome.
Your day-to-day will include:
- Managing a varied, high-volume surgical caseload with dedicated, highly trained nursing support
- Collaborative case planning and consultation with a co-located specialist team
- Clear, empathetic client communication at every stage of the surgical process
- Contributing to a culture of shared standards, where getting it right matters to everyone in the room
This isn’t a role where complex cases land on your desk alone. You’ll have real clinical support behind you and an environment that lets you practice surgery the way it should be practiced.
About you
You’re a surgeon who finds real satisfaction in the craft and the outcomes. You hold board certification in veterinary surgery, or are actively working toward it, and you bring the technical proficiency and professional judgment to manage a demanding, high-volume caseload with confidence.
You work well within a multidisciplinary team, where collaboration with other specialists is how the best decisions get made. You communicate clearly with colleagues and clients alike, and you bring a calm, steady presence to high-stakes clinical moments. If you also take satisfaction in contributing to a professional culture where standards are held high and people look out for each other, you’ll find a lot to value here.
We’re looking for:
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach to clinical decision-making
- Strong client communication and case management skills
- Demonstrated experience managing complex surgical cases
- Board certification in veterinary surgery (DACVS or equivalent), or active candidacy
- Active California veterinary license, or eligibility to obtain one
Our offer
We believe in a package that reflects the caliber of work we’re asking you to do:
- Base Salary: $200,000 to $250,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications
- Sign-On Bonus: Competitive sign-on incentive for the right candidate
- Relocation Support: Relocation assistance to help make the move
- Schedule: Flexible scheduling arrangements
- Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Retirement: 401(k) with employer match
- Professional Development: CE support through our dedicated Learning and Development department, plus access to the broader Ethos network
We’re also happy to explore remuneration arrangements that better reflect your individual circumstances. That’s a conversation we welcome as our relationship develops.
