About us
We’ve grown into a trusted four-doctor practice serving the heart of the MidAtlantic thoroughbred circuit, with our work anchored between Delaware Park Racetrack and Fair Hill Training Center. Dr. Kathleen Anderson has led our practice since 1993 and brings a lifetime of horsemanship to the job, from early years as an exercise rider and barn manager to training under Dr. A. Martin Simensen, long-time veterinarian for the US Equestrian Team. That depth shapes how we work. We provide ambulatory and outpatient care across sports medicine, soundness evaluations, pre-purchase exams, respiratory care, colic management, wound care, and elective surgical procedures.
What keeps us together is a team that respects clinical expertise, shares cases openly, and invests in each other’s growth. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or earlier in your career, you’ll find camaraderie, clinical range, and leadership that backs you in the work.
They take the best care of your horse and if you have an emergency they are very responsive and come in a timely manner. I can not recommend them enough! They have an amazing staff and really care about you and your horse! No matter what vet that has come out for my accident prone horse, they are all so nice and overall great vets! – Caroline B – Google review
About this role
This is a full-time, year-round position with your primary focus at Delaware Park Racetrack, working alongside trainers and horsemen to keep elite thoroughbred athletes sound, healthy, and performing. You’ll have the run of a fully equipped outpatient hospital and the flexibility to extend your work into Fair Hill and the surrounding areas as your clinical interests develop. Your day-to-day will combine the pace of live racing with the satisfaction of seeing cases through from first contact to clean resolution.
- Racetrack Medicine: Managing the day-to-day health and performance of Thoroughbreds in a live racing environment.
- Soundness and Lameness: Working through complex cases with digital radiography, ultrasound, and advanced imaging on site.
- Sports Medicine: Partnering with trainers on long-term performance and recovery strategies for high-level equine athletes.
- Diagnostic Depth: Using endoscopy, gastroscopy, and in-house imaging to take cases through without handoffs.
- Career-Stage Calibration: Mentorship and case collaboration for early-career vets, clinical autonomy for experienced practitioners.
About you
You thrive in the pace of the backstretch, build real relationships with trainers, and want to play a meaningful role in the care of high-performance horses. You take ownership of your cases, communicate with clarity and confidence, and you’re as comfortable collaborating as you are leading. A passion for racetrack medicine, or a genuine curiosity to develop one, matters to us as much as anything on a CV.
- Strong hands-on equine experience, with racetrack exposure a plus.
- Confidence in lameness workups, imaging interpretation, and sports medicine.
- A collaborative approach suited to a tight four-doctor practice.
- Internship training preferred.
- DVM or VMD degree, with eligibility for licensure in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Our location
Two kinds of country meet here: the training grounds around Fair Hill, where thoroughbreds are part of daily life, and the racing-town energy of Delaware Park. Wilmington is twenty minutes away for dinner and culture, with Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the Chesapeake all within an easy drive. Solo clinicians find it small enough to know people by name; couples come for the horse-country character; families raise kids alongside the 5,600 protected acres of Fair Hill’s trail system. You’re close to any city that matters, rooted in country built around horses.
Our offer
We believe in looking after the people who do the work. Our package is built to support your clinical growth, your professional protection, and your life outside the practice.
- Salary: Competitive base, commensurate with experience.
- Relocation: Relocation assistance to support your move.
- Health and Wellbeing: Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- Retirement: 401(k) plan.
- Professional Development: $3,000 annual CE allowance, plus paid state licensing fees and AAEP and AVMA memberships.
- Protection: PLIT coverage included.
- Career Support: Strong backing for professional development, with flexibility to pursue broader clinical interests beyond the track.
- Balance: A schedule designed to protect your time and support a healthy life outside work.
If there’s a different structure or arrangement that would suit your circumstances better, we’re open to that conversation.
