About us
Why Lake Anna Veterinary Hospital
We opened our doors in 2011 with a simple idea: build the kind of veterinary hospital we’d want to work at, and the kind of care we’d want for our own pets. Fifteen years later, we’re still at it — and still loving it.
Our Team
There are 6 of us doctors now, and we genuinely like each other. We text on the weekends. We cover each other’s appointments without keeping score. We celebrate the wins together and lean on each other when a case breaks our hearts — because in this profession, some of them do.
Behind us is the best support team we’ve ever worked with: 9 licensed veterinary technicians, 5 assistants, and a front desk crew that knows clients by name before they walk through the door. Our LVTs are real LVTs — they place IVs, monitor anesthesia, run dentals, and catch things we’d miss. You’ll practice better medicine here because they have your back.
People Stay
Here’s what we’re proudest of, and what we think tells you the most about this place:
Most of our team has been with us over 5 years. A quarter have been here more than 10.
In an industry where the average veterinary staff turns over every couple of years, that’s not an accident. We’ve watched team members get married, have babies, buy houses, and grow into roles they never imagined when they started. They came, they stayed, and they built their lives here.
That kind of stability changes everything. It means our doctors know how each tech works under pressure. It means our clients see familiar faces. It means when something goes wrong on a tough case, the person standing next to you has done it a hundred times with you before.
Our Clients
The families who trust us with their pets are the reason we keep showing up. Many have been with us since 2011 — we know the dogs by name, the cats by personality, and the kids who’ve grown up coming to our exam rooms.
They drive past closer hospitals to get to us. They bring us cookies at Christmas. They send us photos when their senior dog has a good day. When we lose a patient, they grieve with us and we grieve with them.
This isn’t volume-driven, conveyor-belt medicine. Our clients want answers, and they trust us to find them. That’s why we built the hospital we did — so we can actually deliver on that trust.
Our Schedule
33–40 hour workweek. No weekends. No on-call. Ever.
We mean it. We built this practice around the belief that veterinarians who have time to rest, exercise, and be present with their families practice better medicine and stay in the profession longer. Burnout isn’t a badge of honor here.
It’s also a big part of why our people stay.
We’ve been patrons for 14 years at Lake Anna Veterinarian, and have been very pleased. We are always treated with respect and a smile from the staff – Eric J.
About this role
The Role
You’ll work alongside 5 other DVMs as a full-spectrum general practitioner, seeing your own appointments while collaborating on cases with the rest of the team. We’ll build the role around your strengths and interests — if you love surgery, you’ll have the caseload and the tools; if you’d rather focus on internal medicine, dentistry, or rehab, we’ll lean into that.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive wellness exams, vaccinations, and preventive care for dogs and cats
- Diagnose and treat sick patients across general practice — internal medicine, dermatology, ophthalmology, oncology, and beyond
- Perform soft tissue surgeries (spays, neuters, mass removals, abdominal procedures, and more advanced cases as comfort and interest allow)
- Conduct dental procedures using our dedicated dental suite and digital dental imaging
- Interpret diagnostics including digital radiographs, ultrasound, CT, in-house bloodwork, and cytology
- Develop treatment plans and communicate them clearly to clients, with empathy and honesty
- Maintain accurate medical records in our cloud-based, paperless system (AI dictation makes this fast)
- Collaborate with our 9 LVTs and 5 assistants — delegate appropriately, trust their skills, and grow as a team
- Participate in case rounds, mentorship, and continuing education
- Build long-term relationships with our clients and their pets
About you
Key Skills & Abilities We’re Looking For
Clinical
- Solid foundation in small animal general practice (new grads welcome with structured mentorship; experienced vets welcome at any level)
- Comfort with — or willingness to learn — soft tissue surgery and dentistry
- Curiosity about advanced diagnostics (CT, ultrasound, endoscopy); training provided
- Sound clinical judgment and a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to medicine
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) from an accredited program
- Active or eligible Virginia veterinary license, DEA registration
Interpersonal
- Genuine warmth with clients — the families who bring their pets here want to feel heard
- Clear, honest communication, especially in difficult conversations
- Respect for support staff and a true team mentality (our LVTs are our partners, not assistants)
- Emotional intelligence — knowing when to lead, when to listen, and when to ask for help
Professional
- Organized, accountable, and able to manage a full appointment schedule without losing the human touch
- Comfortable making decisions independently while knowing when to consult a colleague
- Committed to lifelong learning — we’ll support your CE goals, but the drive has to come from you
- Honest, professional, and someone who treats coworkers the way they’d want to be treated
- What You Don’t Need
- You don’t need to be a surgeon. If surgery isn’t your thing, we’ll route those cases elsewhere on the team.
- You don’t need years of experience. We have a structured mentorship program for new grads and a team eager to teach.
- You don’t need to know how to run a CT or ultrasound on day one. We’ll train you.
What we can’t teach: integrity, work ethic, and how to care about people and their pets. Bring those, and we’ll handle the rest.
Our location
Live Where Others Vacation
Mineral, Virginia sits on the edge of Lake Anna — 13,000 acres of clear water, quiet coves, and some of the best lake life on the East Coast. It’s the kind of place where your weekends actually feel like weekends.
On the Lake
Lake Anna is a boater’s lake. Open water for skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. Quiet coves for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Public beaches at Lake Anna State Park, with hiking trails and swimming areas right on the water. Largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish year-round — and locals will tell you exactly where to find them once you’ve earned it.
Many of our team members live on or near the lake. Some have boats. Some have kayaks. A few have both. By Friday afternoon in summer, the parking lot empties fast.
In the Mountains
Drive 90 minutes west and you’re in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive, Old Rag, Hawksbill, Whiteoak Canyon — some of the best day hikes in the Mid-Atlantic are within easy reach. Charlottesville’s wineries, breweries, and the Monticello area are about an hour away. In the fall, the leaf-peeping alone is worth the drive.
At the Coast
Two and a half hours east and you’re on the Atlantic. Virginia Beach for the boardwalk and surf. The Outer Banks of North Carolina for wild beaches, lighthouses, and the kind of long weekends that recharge you. The Chesapeake Bay is even closer — fresh oysters, crab feasts, and small-town waterfront restaurants you’ll come back to all summer.
The Cities, When You Want Them
We’re roughly equidistant from three of Virginia’s best cities:
- Richmond (1 hour) — restaurants, museums, the James River, an international airport
- Charlottesville (1 hour) — UVA, vineyards, mountain views
- Fredericksburg (45 minutes) — historic downtown, easy access to DC
- Washington DC is about two hours north when you need it. Most days, you won’t.
Cost of Living
Your dollar goes much further in Mineral than it does in Northern Virginia or any major city. You can own a home — a real home, with land, maybe even waterfront — on a veterinary salary here. Several of our team members have built lives at the lake that wouldn’t be possible anywhere closer to a metro area.
The Pace
The best thing about Lake Anna isn’t any single feature. It’s the rhythm of life here. Slower mornings. Real evenings. Neighbors who wave. Sunsets over the water that make you stop what you’re doing.
You can have a serious career and a real life here. That’s harder to find than it should be.
